What is the history of Daman and Diu?

Daman and Diu are spread over a total area of 112 km2 (43 sq mi), with a population of around 2,42,911 as per the last census. The union territory is separated by the Gulf of Khambhat and bordered by the Arabian Sea and Gujarat. It was established as a separate Union territory in 1987 and was merged with Dadra and Nagar Haveli in 2020 by the Narendra Modi government.  

The Chowda Rajputs ruled Daman and Diu from the 8th to 13th centuries, and then for two centuries, Muslim emperors ruled the region. Portuguese settlers came to Goa in the sixteenth century. Until 1961, Daman and Diu were under Portuguese rule for more than 400 years. Later, the Indian army took the area under their control. The UT (Union Territory) has a rich history and cultural significance that adds flavor to Indian history too. 

There are many beaches, churches, and forts that add a feather to the cap of this beautiful location. Daman offers monuments and serene beaches, whereas Diu opens gates for tourists to witness sunrises and sunsets, attractive seas, and playful sand areas. Climate in Daman and Diu

Mild winters, warm summers, and moderate rainfall during monsoons can give all the joy to a travel enthusiast who wants to explore natural beauty during their trip. Daman has a mean maximum temperature of around 37.2°C and a mean minimum temperature of around 11.5°C. Humidity is around 24–10%, and the UT receives most of its rainfall from June to September, with around 1830 mm of rainfall.

Diu has a cool and dry climate throughout the year. During December and January, the temperature lies between 20°C and 15°C. The summer month in Diu is between March and the end of May, with temperatures ranging from 25°C to 36°C. The Southwest monsoon showers the rain on Diu from June to September, averaging about 60cm. Overall, Daman and Diu have a very calm, breezy, subtropical climate where heavy rainfall does not affect the summer and winter seasons, hence making it a nice place to visit for vacations. 

The Best Time to Visit Daman and Diu

The most suitable time to visit Daman and Diu is during the months of May to September. The weather during these months is pleasant and travel-friendly; you can explore the beaches and fortresses. A moderate amount of rainfall can be experienced during August, making the land lush green. We recommend visiting this amazing place in the winter season (October to February), since the weather remains salubrious.
